Hannibal, Missouri was founded by Moses Bates in 1819. Nestled on the western bank of the Mississippi River, Hannibal remains one of the most beloved river towns in America. Immortalized by Mark Twain in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, visitors have been making Hannibal a "bucket list" place to visit ever since.
Hannibal has always taken great pride in its historic, cultural, and literary heritage. We are grateful to everyone who visited and made memories with us during our Bicentennial Celebration in 2019.
Highlights of 2019 included concerts by Chris Janson, Rhonda Vincent & The Rage, and Victor Wainwright & The Train. Other events included an appearance by the Clydesdales, a hot air balloon festival, drone racing, the time capusle opening and closing, old-time baseball, Hometown Heroes, the discovery of Sam Clemens's signature inside the Mark Twain Cave, breaking a world record, and so much more. You can look back on our 2019 events in photos and news stories here.

Hannibal hosts hundreds of events each year, from its annual Big River Steampunk Festival and its renowned Folklife Festival to Juneteenth and the 4th of July festivities of National Tom Sawyer Days. We are planning some extra special events for our bicentennial celebration and hope you'll celebrate with us!

Hannibal's rich history extends far beyond Mark Twain's legacy. From its origins as a western frontier town to a slaveholding community and a major port for steamboats, Hannibal's history reflects the growing pains of our nation. The town's pride in historic preservation makes it a popular tourist destination.

Did you know that Cliff Edwards was from Hannibal? You don't know Cliff Edwards? Maybe you know him by his stage name, "Ukelele Ike." No? Well, then, surely you know him from his many film roles, including the voice of Jiminy Cricket in Walt Disney's Pinocchio! Click here to learn our favorite fun facts!
